Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

"OK, kids, block one side and blow three times," says Gloria Taylor to the kids sitting in a circle in front of her.

"You're not allowed to let anyone pick up your tissues 'cos they'll get germs," adds one of the young girls.

We're in a primary school classroom in Kempsey, NSW, where school kids are learning basic health skills – like how to blow your nose – from a Dhalayi Doctors trainer.

In the Dunghutti language (the local Indigenous language of Kempsey), 'Dhalayi' means 'young' and since 2013, Dhalayi Doctors has been running as part of a broader, Indigenous-led health program throughout Australia. This year, 400 kids will graduate with know-how about healthy eating, safe food prep, body hygiene and other essential life skills.

"They're at an age when they're like a sponge," says Gloria's colleague, Garth Fatnowna.

Andrew Kuchling, Kempsey South Public School's principal, feels fortunate that his school is part of the program. "Seventy-five percent of our students are from Indigenous backgrounds and we know the health outcomes for Aboriginal communities are quite different than the wider community."

"There was a head lice situation at one school, so we made up a bush medicine that went home with kids in little packs."

For a long time, ‘glue ear' was a common affliction among kids in Dunghutti. If the condition is left untreated, it can lead to hearing loss, which holds kids back from participating in class at school. So Dhalayi Doctors make sure kids know how to blow their nose.

Trainers teach students a combination of conventional and traditional health and healing techniques.

It's not only medicine that kids take home with them. "A lot of the messages that kids learn in the program are taken beyond the gate," says Andrew.

In that way, the young graduates of the program become ambassadors for their communities.

Kempsey South cuts Hip Hop track

Students at Kempsey South Public School, in collaboration with Melville High School and professional Hip Hop artists Moorganics and Wire MC, have cut their first Hip Hop track.

"The students are just wonderful. They have written and produced this track and been so excited about their learning. The track highlights real world issues for our students and is a genuine example of positive learning making a difference in the Macleay," said Mr Davies, the coordinating teacher.

Students collaborated to produce a video track that deals with important social and real-world issues. This massive undertaking required students to immerse themselves in deep learning tasks and step beyond the normally comfortable bounds of a traditional classroom.

Principal Mr Kuchling said, "I couldn't be prouder of our students. Their engagement and positive approach to this task has been simply extraordinary. And while the students have been exemplary, the support and behind-the-scenes assistance they received from Mr Davies and Alana, Annabel and Kempsey council, and of course the good folks from Moorganics and Wire MC has been breathtaking. The result is incredible and something that our whole community can be proud of."

The students have no immediate plans for a follow-up track t yet, instead choosing to take some time to enjoy their recent success.

Our Dunghutti Dancers, Anslem, Isaiah and Adam,excelled themselves! Our boys opened the NSW Primary Principal's Conference in Sydney on 21st October. They did such a fantastic job that the Premier of NSW, Mike Baird, asked to get a photo with the boys. I heard he even got his shirt autographed by our future superstars.

The boys took in the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, a tour of the Sydney Novatel on their journey before flying home on Wednesday afternoon.

Our senior students had an absolutely fabulous time on Friday night attending the Circus Oz show at the Glasshouse in Port Macquarie. Accompanied by a number of staff who volunteered their time, our students were absolutely wonderful in their behaviour and had a fantastic time!

This was an incredible opportunity that we were able to share with our students and a real thrill to be involved in. Thank you to our dedicated staff and also to our local Kempsey Shire Council, especially Annabel Lines, for making this dream a reality.

Our school is committed to living the healthy eating message and today we put up some first-class lunches. Under the expert tuition of resident chef Mr Toby Davies our students grew, prepared, cooked and served a delicious meal of Moroccan chicken and crispy noodle salad with honey mustard dressing.

Our students learned a whole range of skills in this little enterprise, from growing the produce and cooking and serving the food through to budgeting and working out the profitability of their business.

The Easter hat parade is always keenly anticipated at Kempsey South Public School and this year's event was no exception. The students went to great effort to make some wonderfully creative hats and put on a show that delighted the audience. The school was joined by students from Scribbly-Gum Dalai Long Daycare and Dalaigur Pre-school and Children's Services who brought along their hats and joined the parade. It was a fantastic celebration day for the Easter holiday and was great fun for all the kids and their families.

Our students had a wonderful time and were thrilled to see so many visitors come and get involved. It is always a pleasure to see all the smiling faces and excited parents. We enjoyed huge community support today. We actually had more visitors than students which highlights the importance of families in our school community, and the importance of the school community to our families.

Harmony Festival

We celebrated our Harmony Festival by inviting parents and carers into classrooms to participate in learning activities to showcase the importance of being ‘happy and harmonious'. Some of the activities included origami art, bali bracelets, shadow puppets, Spanish woven god's eyes and preparing and serving sushi. Parents were then entertained at the whole school assembly with a number of musical performances before joining the students for a special Harmony Festival lunch.

Days like today are vital for young people to see how lucky we are to live in such a diverse and accepting country. Education is clearly a key feature in this process and judging from the incredible turn-out from parents today it is definitely important to our community as well. It is great to see the students having so much fun while learning about such an important aspect of life in Australia.

Ride 2 School

National Ride to School Day promotes being active and healthy to young people, encouraging them to ride, roll, skate, scoot or walk to school.

We celebrated the event this year with Mr Davies and Mrs Foster meeting students and escorting them to school on their bikes and scooters. Mr Davies commented that, "It is important that students are given every opportunity to keep fit and healthy. This message ties in with our healthy eating and cooking programs we have running and I think that is why it was so well supported by our students."

They were supported by Adam Townsend, owner of Ride Bike Scooter & Skate who talked to students the about the importance or bike safety before running them through some of the essentials of bike maintenance. Adam said, "It is fantastic to see so many kids keeping fit and healthy by riding or scooting to school. I think they all learned a great deal today and had a lot of fun in the process, which is the main idea."

Community involved in BookWeek Parade

We held our BookWeek parade in an explosion of colour and excitement. We were joined by Dalaigur and Scribbly-Gum pre-schools for the event, with a number of Spidermans, Snow Whites and princesses on show from the younger participants. Every child was invited to parade in front of the whole school carrying the book that their character is from. Event organiser Pam Foster commented that, "It is a fantastic day. The kids and the pre-schoolers have all had a wonderful time and the excitement in the lead-up has been palpable. It is just so pleasing to see so many parents and friends here today to encourage and support their children in their learning."

Kempsey South Wins Small School's Carnival

Nine schools from the Macleay Valley took part in the annual combined Athletics Carnival at Services Club Park in Kempsey on June 21^st.

Students from Kempsey South performed brilliantly, winning the carnival overall. Congratulations to Kahlil Whitton (Junior Boy Champion), Kylerah Welsh (Junior Girl Champion) and Shawntai Dungay (11 Year Girl Champion).

Congratulations to all the schools and athletes who took part. The day was a fantastic success.

The Arts and Sports Extravaganza Friday 2 August was a huge success. The event kicked off with a flash-mob performance of the Hamster Dance, followed by the choir's 'I love a rainy night'. The crowd was then treated to some outdoor Shakespearean theatre with a performance of Orpheus and the Underworld and a bi-lingual version of Twinkle Twinkle called Waraata Waraata.

Following the artistic side of events, we celebrated the great sporting culture at Kempsey South with a tabloids afternoon. Many parents thoroughly enjoyed getting back to their childhood in doing / watching the activities.

With around one-third of our parents attending we were extremely well supported and congratulate everyone ona fantastic day.

Our wonderful students performed Waraata Waraata Wupi Buthi (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star) in Dhangatti and English language. In awarding us 1st place, the adjudicator said,

"Very effective use of Aboriginal language for this well known song. The children were very involved throughout. Very appropriate choice of material for this age group!"

A big thank you to Aunty Cheryl, Mrs Knight and Mrs Hudson.

Ride for Sick Kids

We were very fortunate to have the riders and support team who were riding from Narrabri to Newcastle to raise money for ‘Ronald McDonald House' call into our school on Thursday 2^nd September.

As part of this event the school participated in many activities including a colouring competition where there was a first and second place for each class. As well as this there were also two bikes to give away.

2009 Award Winners

Our 2009 Assembly of Excellence was held on Wednesday 9th December where students received awards for their academic, social and sporting achievements. Kempsey Mayor, John Bowel, was amongst special guests, parents and family who witnessed the pride our students had in their achievements.
